Taking Notes

The DTW Inclusive Leadership & Action Group (ILAG)

Created specifically for independent schools, this class and guided group brings together committed DEI change-makers at all stages of their journey. It provides scaffolding and one-on-one support as they create and implement action-driven solutions in their roles on campus and in the larger school community. Through this three month (14-week) program, participants will develop and implement an antiracist “project” based on their role(s) on campus, keep an online journal using facilitator-guided journal prompts (due on non-meeting weeks), read articles, book chapters, and watch videos/films that examine antiracism in practice, and have group discussions during bimonthly in-person meetings.

Potential topics may include, but are not limited to:

  • Taking action and responding to racism

  • Working in solidarity against racism

  • Intersectionality and positionality

Additionally, in this hands-on group each participant will have individual conversations with, and guidance by, the facilitator through “site visit” and one-on-one meetings. The AAG will conclude with a culminating meeting open to the school community where each participant will deliver a brief presentation on the antiracism work they engaged in over the course of the term.

"Engaging with DEI work is always enlightening.  It is imperative that I, as human being in this country continue to engage with this work.  I feel that if you stop learning and examining these difficult topics, you become part of the problem....Thank you Carolyn for leading our group.  Your support and encouragement saw me through delays in my project."

"Carolyn's support individually was invaluable. She is a careful listener. She asks thought provoking questions. I feel as though I made a sort of seismic shift in the way I do exhibitions, and I attribute a lot of that to her readings, frameworks, support and questions."

"[Our school] culture has huge issues with time management. As a result, we rarely work or talk with people outside our program silos. This group offered the opportunity for staff and faculty to talk and listen to one another, to hear what matters in our particular program areas, and to share ideas and gain feedback. A rare opportunity and one I'm very glad I participated in."
